The opening round of the 1984 Australian Touring Car Championship started with a huge grid of more than 30 cars at the Sandown Circuit. Peter Brock in the HDT VH Commodore started on pole position along side the Falcon of Dick Johnson, and straight away proved his mastery of the circuit dominating the race from flag to flag. Brock was also the victor at round 2 at Symmons Plains. Round 3 at Wanneroo, Brock had to settle for 2nd behind the RX7 of Moffat. Brock was absent from round 4, with overseas racing commitments, but flew back for round 5 at Oran Park. He settled back quickly and set the fastest lap, but a retirement due to a broken tailshaft ruined a promising race.
